WEATHERED TIES
THE PROCESS
Make it
I started this piece by taking a photo of a deer skull and bringing it into Rhino 3D, where I traced and layered the outlines based on depth. From there, I built up the form piece by piece, shaping each layer to create a dimensional profile. I also designed a custom plaque to back the skull, like a modern take on a traditional mount.
Once the forms were ready, I brought the outlines into Illustrator to prep for the laser cutter. I ran a few test cuts first to fine-tune the settings, then laser cut the final pieces in wood. After that, it was all about careful hand assembly—super gluing each layer in place, making sure everything lined up just right.
To finish it off, I mounted the skull to a bolo tie clasp, threaded the cord through, and added brass tips to complete the look. I even designed and built my own custom display stands—so the bolo can sit upright on a dresser or nightstand when it's not being worn, almost like a small piece of art.
I’ve since made a few custom versions, including a bull skull, and plan to keep expanding the collection—each one designed to feel a little personal. My process for the bull skull is featured below.
